My interest in art and crafts began early in life. By age 10, I was knitting and crocheting clothes for my dolls and learning to sew as I watched my grandmothers. They worked with their hands and sometimes an old sewing machine as they created beautiful works of art. Though I had few tools and materials in those days, I was quickly drawn into the world of color and handcrafting. Artistic pursuits have been a constant throughout my life and I learned a variety of techniques to accomplish my creative goals. I have always enjoyed planning projects, teaching myself, and producing work that reflects my high standards.
I began making jewelry in 1996, when I was unable to find the delicate bead necklaces I saw on tv and in magazines. Fascinated by the possibilities, I learned stringing techniques, basic wire wrapping, and principles of design. My bead and pearl jewelry received positive reviews and soon I was selling my jewelry at home and office shows. I continued my business, known as KC Jewelry, for 10 years.
Next, I ventured into the world of graphic design and digital scrapbooking. I taught myself Photoshop and created hundreds of digital scrapbook layouts and many themed albums. Seeking to improve my photos for layouts, I learned the proper use of my camera and took advanced courses in photo editing. In 2011, I accepted an opportunity to design digital scrapbook products, which allowed my design, photography, and Photoshop skills to grow.
Summer, 2012, my creative heart came back to jewelry! I wanted to delve into a different set of techniques this time, so I investigated using metal clay and found the process intriguing and the jewelry examples beautiful. I attended a five-day course with Art Clay Master Instructor, Pam East, where I studied techniques of creating with copper clay and bronze clay. I was instantly hooked! Three months later, I studied with Pam East again and completed her comprehensive course to obtain Level 1 Certification in Art Clay Silver.
My fine silver pendants are some of my favorite pieces, simply suspended on a cord or chain. I also love accenting my bead necklaces, bracelets, and earrings with my handcrafted charms. In addition to designing jewelry, I now offer introductory and specialty metal clay classes to individuals and small groups.
